Reading in Buffalo

I have a new laptop. This news is conveyed rather sadly, because the entry I was just about to post has disappeared for good. I don't know what key I hit, but it's gone now. I cannot at this time reconstruct it, but I want you to know that I am enjoying a historical novel, Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross.  It was originally published in 1996, but came out in a second edition in 2009. I highly recommend it, though I must caution I've read just 167 pages out of about 400 pages.

Yes, I'm travelling, doing research in Buffalo, in far western New York. I will have to write about what a wonderful 9th-century historical Pope Joan is. New computer, new hazards. More later.

  1. Oh gosh... sorry about the lost post. Say hello to Buffalo for me, I was there in 1996. Goodness, is that *really* 20 years ago???

    1. Cath,
It's so interesting to know that you visited Buffalo--or did you live here for a time? Would love to know! I find it a friendly city for a newbie who doesn't know where's she's going.

  2. No, we were passing through on the way to Niagara Falls... so strictly speaking I don't 'know' Buffalo. Though I do remember horrendous traffic. (This was two days after we'd arrived in the US on our first trip there, and my husband a newbie to American roads and driving on the right. Plus we were following friends in their car... through Buffalo in the rush hour.) What was interesting was that the river there was full of floating white things. Horrified, we thought it might be industrial polution. LOL. It wasn't until we got to Niagara and found the river at the base of the falls completely frozen and full of ice sculptures (this was April/May 1996) that we realised they were mini icebergs! Fun memories.

    1. Cath,
Thank you for your memories. You must have passed through Buffalo about the same time of year as now. Yes, we have lots of little icebergs (called frazil ice) on our upper Hudson River during winter and April. Because of the mild winter, it's all gone now.
I'm not going up to Niagara Falls because my friend tells me the most gorgeous views are on the Canadian side, and woe is me, I've let my passport expire. I'm enjoying Buffalo so much, I'll have to drag Ken out here and we'll go to the Falls then.
