Unlike Pilcher's novel and my fave of hers, Winter Solstice, which I hope to read again and again and again, I don't think I'll read The Shell Seekers again. It was so incredibly good, and such a journey, and was painful, though not in a bad way.
Just curious--Please do tell which Franzen novels you've enjoyed, because I haven't read anything by him, but have been intrigued.Judithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06435116453270981662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7543676375857581295.post-62895059546065341112021-06-04T17:41:26.258-04:002021-06-04T17:41:26.258-04:00I know exactly what you mean. In the car, I'm absolutely fine with memoir and nonfiction, which surprises me.
About Case Histories--What an intriguing observation! I could not deal with Case Histories at all, which I tried to read in hardcover. I could not bear going back again and again.
Yes, two of Penelope's three children were a bitter pill in The Shell Seekers, that's for sure.
I think!!! That Ken and I watched Wild Mountain Thyme in the past few months. We liked it. Will investigate further to make sure. Wow--thanks for the tip!
I found the 2017 audio to be okay, but the narrator tended to rush, which for a first reading of The Shell Seekers, I realized quickly, was not going to be as good as reading at my own speed.
Did you read Pilcher's Winter Solstice? I think that is my favorite of hers.Judithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06435116453270981662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7543676375857581295.post-39308426171132173702021-05-23T18:10:05.483-04:002021-05-23T18:10:05.483-04:00I read The Shell Seekers a couple of decades ago. ...I read The Shell Seekers a couple of decades ago. I remember nothing but the title, which is disconcerting since this is not due to the book but to my aging brain!

You are right about "women's fiction" being donwplayed and undervalued. Jonathan Franzen has a new novel coming out and no doubt the media will be all over it. And yet, who knew who he was really before Oprah? Or if the audiobook is so long it is due before you finish! Occasionally, something I couldn't get into in print completely captures me as an audio - I am thinking of Case Histories by Kate Atkinson, which is a very strange book but absolutely fascinating.

I am a big Pilcher fan but I agree that her unpleasant relatives are quite a downer.

There was a movie that came out a year ago called Wild Mountain Thyme. I got excited thinking it was based on an early Pilcher but it was completely different and set in Ireland not Scotland! A second re-read coming up for me this coming December.) Pilcher is still very popular in the U.S. as well. What village in Scotland did she live, do you know?Judithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06435116453270981662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7543676375857581295.post-42664745296159424872021-04-27T19:00:33.849-04:002021-04-27T19:00:33.849-04:00I so agree with you. It's strange but it is only in fairly recent years that I realised that Rosamund Pilcher had lived for most of her life in Scotland in fact very close to where I live. I've read a lot of her books, weirdly she's most popular in Germany and they've dramatised several of her books in the past.Katrinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18138715309807238198noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7543676375857581295.post-4522759916126145722021-04-26T17:44:11.279-04:002021-04-26T17:44:11.279-04:00Hi JoAnn,

Wonderful news.
I have heard lots about The Cold Vanish--I have been interested since it was first published. We have poor souls vanish in the deep wilderness of the Adirondacks as well. Oftentimes, the victims have been men between the ages of 50-70 years. And they simply disappear, despite the efforts to search and rescue them. Your thoughts have me curious...

I've never read Nancy Thayer, but loved many of Rosamunde Pilcher's novels decades ago. Last summer did a reread/listen combination of The Shell Seekers(a favorite) and it was every bit as wonderful as I remembered. Winter Solstice is on my wish list thanks to your post about it. Can't remember if it's one I read back in the 80s/90s or not.

I'm not fond of the women's fiction label, but suppose it's better than "Chick Lit"JoAnnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13691864361197071517noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7543676375857581295.post-31468784905186239472021-04-26T07:18:52.903-04:002021-04-26T07:18:52.903-04:00Judith, the last time you mentioned Belonging, I c...Judith, the last time you mentioned Belonging, I checked to see whether the libraries had the audio and they didn't so I think I'll use one of my audio book credits to buy this one. Nancy Thayer has a new book coming out May 4th, Family Reunion. I do like her books. I think "women's fiction" is a demeaning genre as well. I am listening to more audio books as well. and started a wonder audio NF called, The Cold Vanish:Seeking the Missing in North America's Wildlands by Jon Billman.
