November Reading: Looking Forward

I for one am eagerly awaiting Michelle Obama's memoir Becoming (to be released on November 13th). I am planning to purchase the hardcover and also download the audio version.  I'm so eager to hear what she has to say about whatever she chooses to reveal about herself. I find her a fascinating person. I think it must have been difficult to knuckle down to writing this book so soon after leaving the White House, but perhaps not.

Do you ever tune in to the New York Times Book Review Podcast. The NYTBR editor, Pamela Paul, directs the production and every week it has lots of content that's  fascinating. Even when she interviews the author of a book I know for sure I have no interest in reading, I'm extremely interested in the interview! You don't have to be a subscriber to listen. It's carried on iTunes and Google...? I think. Check it out. Wonderful to listen to while washing dishes, cleaning, knitting, you name it.

And of course you must know I've already started lining up the Christmas mysteries and romance book list. Every year, right on schedule. I have several lined up for November and December.
I've now got to purchase an ebook of Winter in Paradise by Elin Hilderbrand, because I muffed finishing the copy I had out of the library for 14 days. This is the first book in a trilogy, and for me, was equal to the pleasure to be found in her Nantucket Quinn Family four-book series. Onward!

I'm still reading The Bestseller by Olivia Goldsmith, all 654 pages of it. I'm now halfway (whew!), but it is still a compelling page-turner. So many storylines and characters all intersecting make it a fun read. I do recommend it.

  1. Oh I love that podcast! I listen loyally and always enjoy the conversation even when I'm not sure I would enjoy the book. Have you ever listened to the BBC's World Book Club? They don't come out very often, but I love those as well. Also, another BBC book podcast, called "A Good Read", which is quite different though, involving a host and two guests, each of whom shares a favourite read and then they compare how much they enjoyed/struggled with the read (only 10 minutes per book). I never get tired of listening to bookchat, but I do run out of time!

    1. I agree with you about the amazing conversations that Pamela Paul has with her guest authors. I believe she preps her questions and shares them with authors well ahead of time, YET SURPRISINGLY, so much is revealed that is not planned that undoubtedly is the result of laying a solid groundwork of preparation. Paradoxical!
And no, I have never listened to the BBC's World Book Club, but I will look it up and the BBC podcast.
Thanks so much for the recommendations, and my knitting thanks you as well!

    1. Hi Diane,
Now that you mention it, I miss them so much that my heart aches with it. I surely have enjoyed Obama's antics on the campaign trail, though! Did my heart good.

    1. Hi Diane,
I can't wait to continue reading the saga. What is it about Elin Hilderbrand's writing that is so addictive. She knows her characters so well and she also knows how to make her books fun, even when there's tragedy and bad times.

  4. Planning to get Michelle Obama's book for my daughter for Christmas. Can't decide whether to buy a copy for myself or wait and borrow hers... which seems a bit cheeky. LOL

I love lining up a few Christmas books too and have one or two mysteries in mind already.

    1. Oh, gosh, Cath!
I'm dying to know the one or two Christmas mysteries you have in mind.
I've simply must blog a post about the Christmas mysteries and romances that I have felt to be the best over the past 8 years or so.
And I admire your restraint when it comes to reading Michelle's book! I am placing my order the day it's released and will then devour it. Chomp-chomp!

  5. Don't worry, I have very little restraint in point of fact, I doubt I'll be able to wait and will probably buy my own copy of MO's book and devour it just like you. LOL! Oh, if she were to run for president... And I can't tell you how nice it's been seeing President Obama campaigning on our news these past couple of weeks. What a breath of fresh air.

I have Portrait of a Murderer by Anne Meredith and The Mistletoe Murder and other Stories by P.D. James to read this Christmas. Looking forward to both but particularly the P.D. James as I read another volume of her short stories last year and absolutely loved it. I don't read heaps of Christmas romances but one I did quite like was Once Upon a Christmas by Sarah Morgan. It's set around the mountain rescue folk in The Lake District here in the UK.

Look forward to your Christmas mysteries post.

    1. Hi Cath,
I've thoroughly enjoyed seeing Obama campaigning--just loved it!
I read The Mistletoe Murderer by James as well. There's now another volume available here. Actually, I think it was for sale last Christmas, but I didn't purchase it. I should, though, because I'm collecting everything she's ever written. I'm just a TOTAL fan of P.D. James.
I'm also a fan of Sarah Morgan's Christmas romances. The one I liked best was set in Vermont. Oh, I'll get the title for you. It was memorable. It seems that I may have Once upon a Christmas on my Nook--I must check. Thank you for the recommendations!!
