Summer Reading?

My teaching ends on Wednesday, June 26, at 12:30pm. I will be free during all of July and August! I will read whatever I want, whenever I want, but it's true I'll also be working on my book project and writing stuff for my writing group.

When I'm that free, I can never be sure in what reading direction I'll turn. I do know I'd like to read more Nordic Noir. I also must read Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver and Sweet Tooth by Ian McEwan, two of my all-time favorite novelists. I own the books but haven't had the cognitive space to devote to a close reading of them. I haven't wanted to read them while my head is crammed with my teaching life, which I can't seem to stop from being so all-consuming. I wish it were different, but so far I haven't been able to change my habits, however much I've tried.

And for years I've had a copy of one of Gillian Flynn's first novels, Sharp Objects, which I picked up years ago at a library book sale. I intend to read it this summer.

Still, I'm haunted by how much I haven't read.

    1. Thanks, Guy, for mentioning the Nordic Noir book club. I need to seek it out. I need to do a post on Barry Forshaw's books about Nordic Noir, which are full of suggestions as well as critical essays.

      Good reading!

  3. Teaching is all-consuming for me too! But I love the summer break, and there is a long list of books I mean to read now that I have time and brain space....

    1. Does your break last throughout all of July and August? I hope so! When does it start? I'll keep an eye on your blog to keep track of your bookish activities.

Best wishes for a book-filled summer!

  4. What a beautiful photo. I just came to your blog via Sarah Ward's Crime Pieces website and was pulled in by your comments about Maine, a place in which I've vacationed and love.

I can see by looking at your right-hand blurbs that I have a lot to catch up on and look forward to doing this.

By the way, Barbara Kingsolver's Flight Behavior is a great book -- sense of place, protagonist, science on global warming, excellent writing. She is one of my favorite authors, too, and I put this book right up at the top of the list.

  5. Kathy,
    Welcome!
I'm so glad that you loved Flight Behavior. I'm looking forward to getting down to it very, very soon. Still, it's hard when there are always so many exciting new books appearing all the time.

    Happy Summer Reading!
